Self-portrait

I found charcoal almost intolerable to work with when I first started. But I’m getting the hang of it now and the secret – for me – seems to be recognizing its ability to change, morph, be pushed around. This self-portrait is the most recent of about 5 or 6 or maybe more that I drew and rubbed away on this piece of paper. There was more that I wanted to do but I thought I needed to show it at college so I fixed it and now of course I can’t push the charcoal around anymore. However, there’s always more paper and more charcoal so I’ll have to accept this one for what it is and move on!
